Big Bands Break Out

"There is a perceptible increase in the number of active big bands being recorded here and abroad.  Somewhat dramatically more than 40 big band CDs were released in 2006 (not including campus bands).  A sizeable contingent was also submitted for Grammy consideration, logically indicating the perceived substantial quality of the majority  of these recordings.  This growth is a healthy state of forward movement.  Moreover, this landscape of big bands possibly offers more performance opportunities for jazz studies graduates or those with positive campus jazz ensemble experience to segue into community venues.  Note too, that these young players have in most cases been weaned in playing in big band literature in their academic environs.  The following are some firm CD recommendations."

"JAMES L. DEAN BIG BAND, Swingin' at the Whiskey Cafe, Cexton Records
Saxophonist James L. Dean's big band follows a decade-long history of the band's performances since 1995.  Its thrust has been a swinging concept targeted in part as a dance band with a feel-good groove.  Dean's sax and clarinet solos set an inspiring modeel for the band's attitude captured at the Whiskey Cafe.  The jazz charts also suit an irresistible dance mode as it drives vigorously forward.  Arrangements are drawn from Billy VerPlanck, Quincy Jones, Artie Shaw, Billy May, and James L. Dean."
